In 2022, 91 healthcare chains were helplessly invaded by a hack with ransomware. This figure has more than doubled from 2016. It includes at least 19 large hospital chains. This is where hackers get access to all data in a system, and do not give it back until they can pay whatever the hackers demand. Because of this, the data of nearly 42 million Americans was exposed to criminals. That is one eighth of America, whose lives were potentially on the line.
On average, following a cyberattack, it takes 19 days before each and every form of healthcare becomes available to patients again. One study shows that mortality rates increased in 24% of hospitals following a given ransomware attack, in addition to several other nightmarish complications more globally.
